About 18 months ago I got the pieces together for a little dio/vignette, and I've started work on them again. The scene will portray a German dispatch rider checking his map (from the recent Tamiya Motorcycle Orderly set) about to meet up with several British Paras who could really use the map (combining a DML para from their four figure set with the pair in Warriors set 35371). They will be posed on the Verlinden street corner resin base, which includes some rubble, a dead German soldier, cobblestone street corner and other odds and sods.
The base was assembled before we moved from Texas, and I assembled most of the motorcycle kit. The fit of the resin wall pieces was a little dicey, but I used putty and wood filler to smooth things out. The base should be a lot of fun to paint.
The Warriors figures are in nice, but exagerrated poses, and the very heavy resin plugs were a pain to remove. The weapons (a rifle and Bren gun with hands molded in place) broke in half. Nothing too serious, but adding to the assembly process! |

| Chapter 9 - Paras | Nov 5, 2003 |
As I said earlier, I have moved to painting with acrylics. I have a selection of a few Andrea paints, a bunch of PollyScale military and railroad colors, and a wide selection of cheapo craft paints (amazing color ranges available for less than a buck a bottle).
I used a basic acrylic flesh paint for... more |
| Chapter 8 - The Bike | Nov 3, 2003 |
| I have assembled almost all of the bike, and it has been largely painted in the base colors. I have started adding washes for detail and dirt. I plan to put a lot of dried dirt on the bike. I need to figure out where oilstains should go, and will have to consult references there. The kit builds nicely.... more |
| Chapter 7 - Base Near Finished | Oct 30, 2003 |
| Well, it's been a while, but I have been slogging away at this base and the figures. For now, the base is nearly done. Lately I've made the move to all acrylics. Given feedback, I repainted the brickwork red, then painted in the mortar and gave the walls some washes. The interior walls were... more |
| Chapter 6: The biker | Sep 3, 2003 |
| Here is the biker's head. The face was undercoated in acrylic 'peach flesh' color from Apple Barrel. I used a mix of Titanium White, Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber (oils) for the flesh color. The eyes were done with a dot of dark blue oil. All the highlights were done with a whitened flesh... more |
| Chapter 5: The bike... | Aug 29, 2003 |
| I am using the bike and rider from the Tamiya Despatch Rider set. The bike is easy to assemble, about a dozen parts all told. I don't plan on getting suicidal, so I'm not replacing the spokes. I plan to use paint to create the illusion of spokes (we'll see). Anyway, after a plea posted... more |
| Chapter 4: Not so bad after all... | Aug 20, 2003 |
Hi
OK. The painting of the base has proceeded fairly well. I mixed up a red color and blocked it in on the brickwork as shown last time. I used some acrylic washes of light tan to do the mortar, and I've started blocking in particular items of the debris. I used a brown, then a reddish brown... more |
| Chapter 3: Failed | Aug 12, 2003 |
| Well, Paul called it right so far! Thanks to Eric and Paul for comments. I used a medium wash of sepia oil, followed by a wash of raw umber, and the result was that you can still see the acrylic primary colors. Given comments on the appearance of buildings in Arnhem, I've blocked in the brickwork... more |
| Chapter 1: The Stuff... | Aug 7, 2003 |
Here is the basic layout of my project. I have partially assembled the bike and rider to get them posed. Two paras are included. I'm not sure if I'll add a third, because it will get pretty crowded. The digicam had a lot of trouble focusing on the plain resin figures. Too shiny I guess.
My... more |
| Chapter 2: Painting the Base | Aug 7, 2003 |
| I gave the base a wash of black paint, then let it dry. Somewhere I read that realistic brick colors can be made by laying in bright primary colors as a first stage. Then, washes with sepia and other dark shades are made to turn the riot of 70s color into something weathered and real looking. The picture... more |
