Modeller Build Logs

Encounter in Arnhem

By Andrew Herbert

About 18 months ago I got the pieces together for a little dio/vignette, and I've started work on them again. The scene will portray a German dispatch rider checking his map (from the recent Tamiya Motorcycle Orderly set) about to meet up with several British Paras who could really use the map (combining a DML para from their four figure set with the pair in Warriors set 35371). They will be posed on the Verlinden street corner resin base, which includes some rubble, a dead German soldier, cobblestone street corner and other odds and sods. The base was assembled before we moved from Texas, and I assembled most of the motorcycle kit. The fit of the resin wall pieces was a little dicey, but I used putty and wood filler to smooth things out. The base should be a lot of fun to paint. The Warriors figures are in nice, but exagerrated poses, and the very heavy resin plugs were a pain to remove. The weapons (a rifle and Bren gun with hands molded in place) broke in half. Nothing too serious, but adding to the assembly process!

Chapter 4: Not so bad after all...Aug 20, 2003
Hi

OK. The painting of the base has proceeded fairly well. I mixed up a red color and blocked it in on the brickwork as shown last time. I used some acrylic washes of light tan to do the mortar, and I've started blocking in particular items of the debris. I used a brown, then a reddish brown wash of acrylics on the cobblestones, and the primary colors are almost gone! You can now see subtle differences among the cobblestones, so this technique may have worked! The figures are pinned and ready to be painted, and I have started blocking in their faces.
