Modeller Build Logs

Uparmoured Challenger 2

By Christophe Jacquemont

Having built Cromwell Models’ excellent resin Challenger 2 some years ago, I wasn’t that eager to build the Trumpeter kit until some aftermarket conversion for the uparmoured variant, which looks very different, started to appear. It might seem a bit fruitless right now to convert Trumpeter’s “straight” Challenger 2 to the uparmoured variant with a resin conversion but at the time neither the Trumpeter uparmoured Challenger kit nor the forthcoming Tamiya kit were available. I’m having fun with this project anyway, more fun probably than I would building a plastic kit straight out of the box! Note that I was aware of the accuracy problems of the Trumpeter kit but initially didn’t want to make any change to the base kit/conversion combo, but I couldn’t resist some minor modifications, nothing as drastic as Leo Lee did though (see his blog).

The following items were used in my project : Trumpeter Challenger 2, Accurate Armour Challenger 2 Kosovo/UN upgrade set, Accurate Armour Challenger 2 decals and Armoutrack Challenger 2 tracks. Shortly after beginning I also received Lion Roar’s Challenger 2 photo-etch as a review sample.
