Modeller Build Logs

Uparmoured Challenger 2

Having built Cromwell Models’ excellent resin Challenger 2 some years ago, I wasn’t that eager to build the Trumpeter kit until some aftermarket conversion for the uparmoured variant, which looks very different, started to appear. It might seem a bit fruitless right now to convert Trumpeter’s “straight” Challenger 2 to the uparmoured variant with a resin conversion but at the time neither the Trumpeter uparmoured Challenger kit nor the forthcoming Tamiya kit were available. I’m having fun with this project anyway, more fun probably than I would building a plastic kit straight out of the box! Note that I was aware of the accuracy problems of the Trumpeter kit but initially didn’t want to make any change to the base kit/conversion combo, but I couldn’t resist some minor modifications, nothing as drastic as Leo Lee did though (see his blog).

With the flaws of the Trumpeter kit and the very vague AA instructions, it's essential to have good reference. The most useful being the walkaround in an old Military Modelling whilst two more recent issues of MM provide info on the uparmoured variant in Kosovo. Concord's Challenger 2 book is also useful and there are also some good photos in Concord's "Assault volume 5" (not pictured). On the web, the walkaround on Jan Willem de Boer's website cleared up a few issues. It's at http://krimi.tripod.com/challenger2/chal2.html .
