Modeller Build Logs

A couple of weeks ago I wrote up a review here on Track-Link of the Legend Sherman III conversion set (LF 1096). I really liked the set and couldn’t wait to start on it. So I thought, why not do a blog to show how the build-up comes together? So here it is. Up Next: What items am I going to use?

Chapter 20 - Detail PaintingSep 5, 2005
I thought I’d include a short chapter to show the way I painted the details (pioneer tools, .30 cal and .50 cal MGs, etc) on the model. I try to paint the details before I give the model a wash so that they blend in a little better.

Most of the detail painting on this model is on the tools. I like to paint the metal surfaces on the tools and the machine guns in Testor’s Model Master Gunmetal. This paint is designed to be airbrushed but I’ve found it to be perfectly good for brush painting as well. I then dry brush the metal surfaces with Testor’s Model Master Aluminum Plate. It looks quite bright but after a flat coat and some wash, it blends right in.

I painted the wood part of the tools in Testor’s Model Master Dark Tan and then used a fine brown marker (its good to have a wife who’s into scrapbooking) to simulate the wood grain. Again, it looks a little bright but tones down a lot with flat coating and washing.

Finally, I painted the leather pads on the hatches in Testor’s Model Master Signal Brown.

Up Next: Weathering
