Modeller Build Logs

T-34/76 Kit-bash

By Glenn Bartolotti

I needed to do something different to off set the "Smart kit" syndrome so I looked through some of my books and thought of some of the models out there and came up with this one. I am using the Zvezda T-34/76 as the base kit and the Maqutte T-34 1940 kit for its early wheels and link to link tracks. Both kits did not cost that much and the Zvezda kits is not a bad model. On the other hand the Maquatte kit is only good for some of its parts. I will be building the tank seen from the Squadron T-34 book since the Zvezda kit comes with the exact decals to match.

Painting the FigureAug 15, 2006

I have begun to paint the figure. It was undercoated first, then pained with oil paints. The photo on the left shows the first layer of paint on the jump suit/helmet and some pre shading on the face. The photo on the right shows highlights added which will be blended next with a soft clean brush. At... more

WeatheringAug 13, 2006

The weathering process has begun. I used rust and yellow ochre pastels which were ground into powder on sandpaper. They are mixed on wax paper with turpentine and applied to the model as spot washes. I wetted the area to be applied with clean turpentine first. Burnt umber and black oil paint were also... more

PaintingAug 11, 2006

Here is the painted model. Model Master paints are used. I never paint a single shade, instead I do a lot of mixing of paint and lighting with white on the armour surfaces. The turret areas that are to recieve decals are first sprayed with Future Floor Wax, as most aircraft modellers do. It gives a... more

FigureJul 30, 2006

I chose a figure for the turret tonight. It comes from the nice Tristar "Russain Tank Crew" kit (#012). The figures are 1/35th scale plastic and are not large over-scaled. I chose them because they seem to fit the size of the Zvezda kit best. Resin figures looked to large and made the turret look very... more

Pre-paint detailsJul 27, 2006

The model, for the most part, is complete. I have added details such as dirt made with Mr. Surfacer, battle damage and weld marks with a soldering pencil. I looked through old photo-eched frets for parts that could be used on this kit along with other items from my parts box. The headlamp was moved forward... more

TracksJul 25, 2006

The tracks are from the Maquette kit and are link to link. I assemble them with liquid cement and glue them to the bottoms of the wheels and front drive wheel, then they are flipped over and connected. I always leave the body off so they can flip around without hitting the fenders. This is done on all... more

TurretJul 23, 2006

I built the turret out of the box. It has a nice cast texture but I went ahead and added some Mr. Surfacer 500 anyway.

I also use the kit barrel. It is a one piece mold with an end cap. I painted it with Mr. Surfacer and then sanded it smooth.

Lower HullJul 21, 2006

Here's the lower hull. I added Mr. Surfacer 500 with a Q-Tip which I kept dabbing it on to make this area rough to represent dirt.

The wheels are from the Maquette Kit and you can see the inside hubs are remove along with the tip of the axel so the wheels will align with the drive wheel and return... more
