Modeller Build Logs

Building the Tristar Pz. I Ausf. A (new tool)

By Glenn Bartolotti
Started: Apr 27, 2007
Updated: May 8, 2008

Following on from their earlier Panzer IA kits (#35003 and #35008 now discontinued) and the recent Panzer I ohne Aufbau (kit#35025) comes this new revised kit of the German Panzer I Ausf.A which can be built as an early 3.series/La.S or later 4.series/La.S vehicle. Also released is a limited edition kit #38028S that has three sprues B, G and I included in clear plastic to show off the full interior and this review will look at both the kits together as the parts are identical apart from the limited clear parts.

The kit consists of 335 parts in light beige plastic with another 192 individual track links and 6 in clear plastic with Sprues A, B, C and D from the earlier Panzer IA kits and revised sprue E and T from the Flakpanzer I (kit #35019), sprue I for the engine parts from the ohne Aufbau (kit #35025) and new sprue J with the hull interior parts and sprue K with new enhanced road wheels as well as a revised sprue G for the later hull parts.

Weathering IIMay 8, 2008

Since I pre and post shade there is no need to dry-brush. My post shade high-light color is always very light so the wash that falls in the cracks and corners does not darken the model so much. I see most modelers paint the model in a final color only to add a dark wash and turn the model very dark.... more

WeatheringMay 2, 2008

I use pastels and oil paint to do my final weathering and detail painting. The pastels are $1.00 a stick at the art store and I use a file to grind them into powder. I mix them with odorless turpentine and apply them as a filter were needed but NOT ON THE ENTIRE MODEL. The rust shades are applied wet... more

Pinting the Base CoatApr 11, 2008

I painted the model by starting with a dark panzer grey and pre-shaded by adding white. Next I did the same but used africa yellow. Sorry the photos are a little blurred, I am learning a new camera I just bought and messing with the depth of field.

Next is the weathering.

Assembly FinishedApr 7, 2008

The kit is now built! I added the tools and PE clasps and the rest of the PE. I left the front fenders off the represent a DAK tank that I plan to paint.

This is a great little kit with lots of detail. I don't care for PE so it was I good build and I think the plastic parts are better than PE... more

Muffler GuardsMar 23, 2008

I have now added the photo-etched muffler guards. I followed the instructions and rolled each guard around a tube, I used a pencil.

The TurretFeb 1, 2008

I have now moved on to the turret. It has most all of the details added. Care must be taken in fitting the parts. I will spray the interior next before I move on. Of note when placing parts B-23/24 in section 11 Rear Hull, make sure the correct ones are used.

Attaching the Upper HullJan 19, 2008

I have moved on to adding the upper section and rear deck. ALL parts fit very well. The rear deck comes in to parts one for early and one for late. I chose the late version because I will be making this a DAK tank. You have the option to add PE screens to part #I-5, but you have to cut out the plastic... more

Painting the InteriorJan 5, 2008

The interior is airbrushed first drak grey then highlighted with off white in the photo below.

My motto is "when you airbrush you don't have to stay in the lines like you did as a kid" when you do the final weathering it will tie it all together photo below. The weathering was done with oils... more

Interior and EngineDec 30, 2007

I have now added all the interior items and engine. This kit is really great for those who enjoy doing all the guts of a tank. Tristar has really done a good job with all the little details. All the items went together well with just test fitting to make sure I was right. The instructions are so much... more

The TracksNov 24, 2007

I have added the tracks which are very nice and kinda snap together but I would suggest glue. As you can see in the photo I do a complete run of tracks glue then to the wheels let they set 5 minutes then just wrap them around and then form a nice sag.

The Running GearMay 17, 2007

This is a nice kit. The running gear is as perfect as you can get it and goes together great. The tracks are next.

Step 1 and 2 - InteriorApr 27, 2007

I followed the instructions while building steps 1 and 2. Assembly was straight forward, although I added the front plate C-22 (front plate) so it would help square the body sections up.
