I must confess that I have not really been interested in this tank over the many years. My mind was set back in the 1970/80s with the memory of the old Italieri kit. I even went as far as to build an Ausf M from that kit as it was the one I really wanted. That all changed when the DML kit was released a few months back. The detail added was light years above the older Ausf H kit. Then Tristar announced the kit of the Ausf H which made one ponder....why. Thanks to the folks on this site and at PMMS, the reason why was soon answered. After reading the reviews of the DML kit and those of the Tristar kit I decided to sell the DML kit.
Enter Paul Owen. He asked on this site if anyone would like to build this kit for a blog to which I posted, along with ,that I wanted the chance. Paul decided to make the choice and it would be me. Thanks Paul. Anyway, I decided to get a few extra things for the kit because I'm never happy it seems if I don't update something...no matter how good the kit would be. This one is very good indeed. |

| Time to Paint the Lower Hull | Jun 27, 2007 |
In this chapter I will discuss the process I use to paint the hull interior. I tend to build as much as possible before I paint a base coat. The Base in this case was black. I use black for two reasons. The first is to cover everything with a single monotone color. I never want to see unpainted plastic. Black is a good base for grime and other dirt seen in an open top AFV. The second reason is black can be great as a basis for the weathering process.
After the black as been airbrushed, (Tamiya Black) I then proceed to apply a new coat of paint for the interior. I used a mix of Tamiya flat White and a touch of Brown. I wanted a not so much a cream color as opposed to a off white color. I sprayed the whole area the this new color. The following photos I took will show the effect I was looking for. Keep in mind that this color will not be applied to the upper hull interior. It should be noted that I have decided not to add the radio to the center of the hull interior as the instructions direct. More on that later.
After the areas were painted I then started the weathering process. I used oils mixed with odorless Turpenoid (turpentine substitute). I really like this stuff and it really doesn't smell. The oils I used are from Winsor & Newton. A wash of Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna was mixed up and applied. I added the wash several times till I got a really worn and dirty look. A little black was added and flicked on the floor to give the impressions of oil and gas spills. Next I started adding chips, dings and scrapes to the paint. I used black mixed with brown with a touch of steel. This paint was from Testors model masters series enamels. After I was satisfied with the weathering and interior painting I assembled the hull. |
