Hello Tim,

My own experiences with forming plastic card are :

1.
The roof -(wich is bascially most of the structure, besides front and rear walls)- of a 1/48 scale Nissen Hut.
This I shaped out of a corrugated Evergreen sheet.

2.
Some additional small curved plating sections on top of the boiler roof of Trumpeter's 1/35 Baureihe 52 Kriegslok steam engine.

In both cases I used the combination of the two methods you mention yourself ie. combining a base shape with the same curvature like a can, or eg. a wooden dowel plus the hot water treatment.
Or better said, the shaped form into the hot water treatment.

Hot, in my case, meaning the temperature that your hands just can stand the heat without hurting.
I would'nt recommend any hotter -and certainly not boiling-hot- to avoid the risk of distorting the structure of the plasticard.
Not even mentioning the likely damage to the structure of....your hands.

It is not a one second process, please bear that in mind.
You probably have to repeat the Hot Water Treatment a few times in a row before you get to the desired result.
I'd do some trial pieces first if I were you.

H.T.H. and Happy Modelling
Jerry
