These M36B1 conversions have also turned up in Pakistan. My point is, there were an awful lot of M36 and M36B2s exported as assistance after the war, and a lot of Sherman tanks, whereas just 187 of the M36B1 were built, and these seem to have been issued in Europe where they would have seen hard use.
The turret swap is very easy to do, and would be a quick way to get an upgunned and still reasonably armored medium tank into service to stiffen up a third world army's Sherman tank battalions. And unlike the M36, it would have a machine gun under armor. |
