If you must use wood, either epoxy or krazy glue should work, especially the epoxy. If you must use krazy glue, I'd put some on the area of the wood to be glued first and let it dry. Otherwise, it might all soak in before it sticks to the plastic. Once it's dry on the wood, I'd put more on. The first coat should help seal it.
However, I must agree with Roy that plastic is probably the way to go. When faced with similar situations as your own, I use those old crummy tamiya jerry cans stacked up with the guy on top of them. Paint them black and you'll pretty much never see them through a hatch already crowded with a tanker body.
