Ed, from my experiance, friction will NOT hold them together. Thats the main reason I have been "building" these for so long. I first attached the duckbills to enough for the outside end connectors. My set had raised pin marks on the inside of the track shoes. I filed off quite afew, but the tracks just would not hold together. Your post prompted me to get them out again and toy with them. I just did not like the fit, not only do they not hold together, but the pins on the track shoes are too long. The end connectors will (with duckbills) will not come all the way in to the shoe. So what I have done is started using the DML T62 (comes with the old Firefly) track pad with the AFV end connectors. The reason was that I really wanted a set of steel track for my particular project, I just nipped off the three rivet head looking things. However the DML end connectors are not well done. The AFV are VERY nicely detailed. The downside is they must be glued this way, but the end result is very nice looking, so far.

All that being said, working on these it finially dawned on me why I have not done many Sherman projects. I HATE the tracks. If only DML or (fill in the blank) would come out with a set of aftermarket rubberband tracks like their DS tracks with the M4A2. They were great! Please! Give us a choice of each type of track, with and without duckbills. They will sell like hotcakes!
