Hi Dominic,
how about cutting of the little square piece with the number, thin the bottom with rough paper or dremel, than carefully sand/file off the rest? With the number relief against your fingertip file until nothing else left, but the number. Never tried it though. Or you could cast it, press the numbers into a piece of putty, lube it, then spread putty into it removing excess right away (like you fill holes).
Does this make sense?
