To be honest, I've never had a problem using a nice sharp #11 blade. If the letters are a bit curled, gentle pressure will get them mostly flat and then the liquid cement will take care of the rest. Use repeated applications of a little glue with gentle pressure to get them to lay down to the substrate.

Let's face it, you don't need to read them well enough for your last will & testament, just a hint of the numbers is more than good enough. :-)
