Hi Bill,
The early pattern radiator intake screens are the ones with the simple curve along their entire length. These are parts D10 in the Trumpeter kits. They were used from the KV prototypes in the winter of 1939/40 until July 1941, and are therefore appropriate for a KV-1 Model 1939, early KV-1 Model 1940, KV "Big Turret" or early KV-2 Model 1940.
A problem arises with the rear hull overhang (the curved plate) that Trumpeter provide. In all but the "Big Turret" kit they give you the second "humped" version that was introduced in July 1941, at roughly the same time (give or take a week) that the late pattern radiator intake screens were introduced. You can back-date your "small turret" KV to use the early screens, but you also need to sand a flat spot in the top of the rear overhang (sand it level with the top of the hull sides) and omit the applique armor from the hull front and driver's front plate.
The late pattern intake screens were introduced during July 1941 and were used on variants from that point onward.
The KV s Ehkranami was manufactured during July 1941 and photographs show the majority of them had the late pattern radiator screens. The late screens are also appropriate for a late production Model 1940, any variant with the simplified turret or either of the cast turrets, as well as the KV-1S, KV-85 and SU-152.
There are comments above wrt etched brass screens. Aber's are nice but complicated to put together. I prefer Eduard's "Zoom" set which also include only the radiator screens, exhaust air screens and a saw. Ignore the titles of the sets since they're messed up TP084 has the late screens, TP086 has the early ones.
Watch out for that saw too. The saw and its bracket were only present on vehicles manufactured prior to January 1941. At that point, the bracket was relocated inside the lid of the rear-most stowage bin on the right-hand fender, so omit it from your model unless you're building a KV-1 Model 1939 or a KV "Big Turret".
