Hi Arun,

The inside of the escape hatch is a mystery. The escape hatch is definitely not the same pattern as the upper hatch...for a start, it's smaller. The bolt patterns on the exterior of the hatch imply that the locking mechanism inside was not the same as the upper hatch either. I haven't been able to find any wartime photographs that show the interior of the hatch cover, and I haven't (yet) been able to persuade any museum staff to let me get inside one of the preserved examples, so I can't be sure.

Factory drawings show the escape hatch was not hinged, but was secured by six dogging clips spaced equally around it's circumference, which were attached to a ring inside the hatch opening. The ring was initially attached by eighteen bolts according to factory drawings, but that was later reduced to nine judging by the bolt holes on the underside of the Aberdeen and Bovington vehicles.

Neil
