Hi Bill
Don't ask me for what they were intended for, but on the (only) prototype of the E-100 you could find these grooves. I guess there were some rectangular pieces welded on.
Judging from the pictures in the Spielberger book about special armored vehicles it looks like the slots were there just because of this. I haven't got a clue why this was done that way.
However, Your solution looks more sound.
