The more I get into it, i think a decent one can be made form the kit. Fixing the rounded rear should not be hard either by your suggested method or by building one out of sheet styrene. I do think it might ne a tad longer too.

I got the new George Bradford book WWII AFV Plans for American Fighting Vehicle and he makes the same mistake at Academy by not giving the M3A1 with welded hull a rounded rear. Too bad because his plans are in 1/35.

Looking at the Squadron In Action book they show an "Early Production" diesel M3A1 used by the USMC on Guadalcanal. Now I wonder if this diesel one has the same air cleaner layout as the M3 as shown on page 10. That would be easy to do and kind of cool. Still looks like I would have to do the rounded rear end (so the painting shows on pg 26) but the tank had rivets on the side. Hmmm... what do you think of that?
