I just had a wonderful experience putting link to links together - and I realized during this process why the number of links was often queried by you geeks!
It's no secret - definitely been covered before - but I used plastruct plastic weld (I believe this is the same as Tenac or maybe even Testors or Tamiya super thin) cement. It has a lovely chemical odor which makes the process go along oh so nicely.
I started by de-spruing and cleaning every track link and placing them in a small container for easy access. I then placed a small dab from the bottle-supplied brush on the female part of the tack, took another track, and put them together.
I used 2 different methods for each side - on the first side a made a long run the night before for the flat partt under the wheels, and did the top part the next night In the time it took to cement them all together, the tracks took on a nice consistency - they were starting to get stiff, but stayed together tightly when working them over the running gear - time taken - about 1/2 hour or so.
The second method was to make one long run - I actually liked this way better, as I could securely attach all the links in one shot - no puzzles to fit together.
Oh, and this method was the one where I discovered the value of knowing HOW MANY links I needed. Lesson learned.
BTW - Alan kit - don't know how their styrene compares to DML's. But this method worked awesomely for me. After links were on, I pushed in lengths of sprue to press in the track sag, I'm sure other items would work just as well. Let it dry overnight, and presto - perfectly formed track run.
Oh - BTW - I also "tacked" the running gear in place with some good old Elmers white glue so I could remove all running gear for painting. Don't know how well this is going to work out, but I have high hopes.
Hope this long windedness is somewhat helpful.
DId you even ask this question? |
