The drill bits need to have a 1/8th inch shank to fit into a Dremel collet (as I recall, Hobby Expo sells such a set with uniform shanks). Alternatively, you can buy an adjustable chuck that screws onto the Dremel shaft in place of the collet (I don't think Dremel makes it themselves--I picked one up years ago as an aftermarket accessory).
With Dremels and plastic, the slower the RPMs, the better. High speed equals high friction, and the heat melts the plastic. I used to use a single speed model with a separate rheostat-type speed controller (you're not supposed to use this with a variable speed Dremel, though). The variable speed corded versions are still too fast to use safely on plastic. I haven't used a cordless model.
For thinning plastic, you can get oval steel burrs in various sizes. I also like to use these chucked into a pin vise when I want to add damage or texture to styrene, but want a lot of control. |
