Some very good ideas on this thread for stowage making.

Some time back on Track Link someone suggested Kleenex with diluted Elmer’s white glue. I have used it and with a little practice I get some bed rolls I really like. The biggest problem I had was getting them small enough. I take a stir stick and wrap it with the Kleenex cut to the width, with the edges folded over, that suits the model. I then use Crochet thread which has a good twist pattern like rope or cable and come in various sizes and tie the bed roll like it would be tied. I then apply the glue in two coats, some time more. After it dries I remove the string and I use Tamiya paints to give the roll the right color, I also color some more string to rope shade. I then re-tie the roll in the grooves that were shaped in the glued Kleenex.

With some ground pastel chalk brushed on the roll it looks like the real thing to me. As I mentioned above in the right size Crochet thread also works for tow cables with some paint.
