Unless your friend wants to make many barns, why make a mold?
I don't work with resin casting but I have made wood molds for vacuumforming. I wouldn't use liquid wood glue to seal the wood. My experience is the glue may flake off. I use thin "crazy glue" to seal my wood. I would think any thin paint, like a sanding sealer would work so long as it soaks into the wood.
If you use crazy glue, make SURE to do this OUTSIDE and don't position your head over the wood while the crazy glue is applied. The moisture in the wood reacts quickly with the glue and the fumes are visible and damaging to eyes and breathing!
Does the sealed wood require sanding? I don't know but from what I've seen of the molding process I would not think sanding is necessary.
Sorry I can't give you an answer from experience.
