Ian,

Many, many, years ago I made some moulds for a series of glass-fibre samples for an A Level project, it's a long a tedious story. Anyway, these were made from resin and I made the moulds from plywood.
I sealed those with ordinary Ronseal varnish, which once dry is pretty much impermeable to most liquids and substances. I treated them with release agent and cast the pieces, which were fine, though getting them out of the moulds was tricky, as the moulds didn't flex.
As you are mastering the pieces in wood, that should not be such a problem.
