Hi Dominic , the key to soldering is preperation , it is the same for your soldering tip . You need to clean it back to the copper ( must be done when cold. ) Use a fine file , and when clean coat straight away in resin flux , then heat up and add the resin cored solder it will coat the tip in a fine layer .. If at any time it pools then a gentle rub with the file and repeat the tinning stage , Based on 45 years as an electrician in shipyards and Power industry . good luck cheers ian
