I think this "shrink" problem is peculiar to Dragon Magic Track; any "unworkable" (glued) indy track links can produce the same problem. In fact I once had the same problem with indy links in DML Jagdpanzer IV kit.
I guess that the problem stems from slight shrinkage of "glue", rather than "links".
When you glue a run of indy links and apply it around wheels before glue is completely dried, you are somewhat "stretching" the links. If you detach the links from the wheels and let it dry, the glue will shrink and bring two adjacent links tighter together, thus, you will end up with the run of links shorter than when it was on the wheels. Even if you leave the links on the wheels, and remove them only after you think the glue has completely dried, it may not, and you may still get some shrink effect afterwards.
To avoid this, I usually do the following:
1. Attach wheels to the chassis, but I do NOT glue them.
2. Assemble and glue a entire run of links, and attach it to the wheels. "I glue the links to the wheels", and do NOT leave any opening in the run.
3. Wait a few days until glue dries.
4. Remove the track links and the wheels TOGETHER from the chassis.
5. Paint the chassis, and this assembly of the wheels and the links, and put it back to the chassis.
Yes, you have to paint the track links and wheel together, and it may not be most convenient.
When I am not very confident that it will get me painting convenience and final paint effect in this way, I opt for workable indy links such as Model Kasten or Friul, so that I can paint track links separately and put them to the chassis at the very end of painting stage of my build.
I hope this might be some use to you.
