If you can find a very fine vinyl screen in a diamond pattern, that should do nicely (window screening is too coarse). Wedding veil (toulle) is cheap at the fabric store (a dollar or two will buy a lifetime supply), but it is usually a woven hexagonal pattern--good to depict chicken wire, but not for an engine screen. You can also check places like aquarium stores, which sell fine mesh to segregate parts of a fish tank (adult fish will eat small fry). Very fine expanded aluminum or brass mesh is sometimes included in the wrapping of shielded electrical or sound cable. Talk to an electrician about sources (one manufacturer used to sell sections of it as HO scale railroad fence material years ago, and I did several T-34s using this).
