Hi, Scott.
Dan's idea does sound good and I will need to try that soon. My hammy hands need everything possible to grab on to when doing tracks and PE. What I do is buy thin steel rods which you can usually find at a hobby store and use them instead of the wire Fruil supplies. These wire look very much like guitar strings and may very well be. I like using them because they are more rigid than the wire Fruil supplies in the box. I take the rod and insert it into the open holes on the individual link to determine how long the individual pins should be. To be sure I cut it to the correct lenght, I assemble 2 links and then cut the rod to the length I want. That first pin is now my master and from that I can simply cut as many pins as I need with all of them being the same length.
Don't forget to inspect all the links to make sure there's nothing blocking the opening where the pins are inserted. I use a pin vice and a drill bit approximately the same size as the opening and carefully insert the pin vice until it goes through all the holes on the track link. Be careful to not take your pin vice bit too far or it will go out the other end of the track.
Let me know if you can't find any steel rod/guitar strings and I'll send you some if you like.
Cheers!
