Hi Andy!
If you look at the pic carefully, you'll notice what looks like another,
horizontal bracket just above the fender. I also suspect that the plate
might have been welded along the sides of the tranny housing.
But the plates aren't the most puzzling thing about that pic. Of special
interest is the apparent inversion of the commander's copula and loader's
hatch (no, the photo is not inverted - look at the hull MG). Also
intriguing are the objects stowed on the outer edges of the front armor
plate. Those look suspicioulsy like boxing gloves (2 pairs)!
As for the stowage support for the .50 cal MG behind the turret, I don't
agree totally with Kurt (sorry Kurt) as to the barrel having to be
dismantled and stowed separaely from the receiver. I have seen a few
pictures showing fully assembled .50 cal MG's stowed on the supports at the
rear of the turret. I think it was actualy possible to stowe the MG either
way.
