Graeme,
The weathering effect is fairly easy to achieve. After the normal spray and
painting job I tend to add all the required markings. Then it's time to add
a wash, drybrush and apply pastel chalk to get the extra dusted and used
effect.
The blade was painted Nato green (that is still Tamiya FS58 for me...) and
the lower edges where drybrushed with a metallic color since this part of
the blade is constantly on the ground when in use. The blade of this ARV is
hardly ever used for earth digging activities since it's main job is adding
stability to the vehicle during lifting of say an engine. An over dusted,
rusted and scratched blade is thus not often the case with this vehicle. I
took a good look at some Dutch Buffels and their blades often didn't look to
battered.
I got myself some normal chalk sticks in the desired colours. Any good paint
and artist shop should have them. Scrape the stick with a knife so you can
collect the chalk powder. Scrubbing the stick against sandpaper is also a
fine method to collect the right amount of powder although the powder will
saturate the paper very fast.
Use a soft paintbrush to pick up the powder and apply it to the model. Avoid
brushing the powder on heavily as it will leave stripes and scratches
unless that's what you want. Be sure you're picking up powder and not a
combi of powder and pieces of hard chalk.
To much powder and dust? Blow it off and it should only stay behind in the
right places. Only problem with this particular method is that you should
avoid touching your model on the applied places as it leaves your
fingerprints all over the model. Oh yes, be sure your model is completely
dry! If not, the effect goes all wrong.
It also means that applying pastel chalks should be the absolute last thing
you do with your model.
Although pastel chalks are a great way of adding used and dusted effects,
the method has slowly lost popularity.
Nowadays we go mad with paint chipping which in my humble opinion is to
often overdone.
Best regards,
Marcel.
