Hi Guys,
I personally do not use the photo-etched rivets as they are too thin. I
prefer to punch out a few or to slice rod for the rivets. If the rivets
need to be hemispherical, it is easier to cut it off another kit such as an
airplane (Aaaaagh...did I write that?!?). There have been times that I have
used the pe rivets. It is tedious but this is my method.
I usually cut off one of the two mountings. I then cut some of the
'runner' holding the one mounting point. This allows me to clean off the
barbs from one side. If I need the hemispherical type, I bend the rivet 90
degrees on its mounting point and put the runner in a vise, mound of clay,
third hand (in other words, I want my hands free).
I can then carefully apply a micro drop of cyanoacrylate (super) glue on the
rivet until it forms the proper shaped head. A toothpick with the tip split
into a 'Y' shaped fork works well.
Once the head is ready for mounting, I use diluted white (cellulose) glue
after cutting the part off with scissors. It works perfectly every time but
takes far too long.
So, buy some bargain bin airfix kits or find an airplane modeler with a
bunch of them. Offer to carefully slice the rivets off so he/she doesn't
have to sand them off. Yes, I'm being optimistic.
There is always the expensive aftermarket choices of plastic rivets, nuts,
and bolts from MR Models, ModelKasten, Grandt Line, and the resin nuts and
bolts from Verlinden.
I hope this helps.
