The wire you talk about is available through electronics supply stores. It is sold as "winding wire", and yes, its main use is construction of electric motors and other small electrical items. In Australia it is widely available through the "Dick Smith" chain of electronics stores, and so I imagine you should be able to find it without too much trouble. Just ask for either 36 or 40 SWG wire. The only disadvantage is that the wire comes in spools of 85 and 216 metres respectively - hope you're intending to build lots of aircraft!
