Your best bet is to get a good reference photo of the type of
vehichle you want to model and work from that, since, although some markings
are consistent, things like unit markings vary depending on date,
operational requirments etc and can be geometric symbols, number sequences,
letters and numbers etc.
See if you can get hold of 'British tanks of WWII' (Parts 1 and 2)
for some ideas, it's got the highest photo's to £ cost you're likely to
find.
Lighter on reference pictures, but with a cracking yarn attached, is
'Armoured Guardsman' by Bob Boscowen (my spelling of the authors' sir name
might be a bit shakey).
