Hi Alex

Humbrols are what I use. I don't use an airbrush. I'm a paintbrush guy. I paint figures and do armor.

Great for washes and painting. I use raw sienna, burnt sienna, black, payne's grey, white, ochre, raw umber and other earth tones for washes and weathering armor. You can get some primary colors with these and mix whatever you want. Furthermore, you can mix oils and enamels, and that speeds drying of the former and gives you a flatter finish too.

Some folks spend a lot on Windsor & Newton Series 7 brushes. I haven't yet. I look for brushes that hold their shape when wet (I test them in the art shop using the wet and flick method). I find any old brush is good for washes/weathering.

Don't bother!! ;-)
I'm in the minority here!

Actually, decals go on a lot better over a gloss coat. Then after applying the decals you can add a matt finish.

Yep. On your list of priorities these should be near the top! You can use them for washes mixed with water and a bit of windex or detergent. You can paint camo with them. They are the miracle tool of modelling IMHO.

Get a nice sharp #11 Xacto knife. You can buy a sharpening stone, and save a lot on blade replacement that way! I use a new blade once in a while, but the sharpening stone lasts forever!
I use Testor's liquid cement in the bottle, and you can apply the glue with the included brush, or for finer work use an old fine paintbrush (no plastic bristles though!). White glue can be usd for lots of stuff, and of course if you get into PE, you'll need superglue. A nice sprue cutter helps make piece removal cleaner and faster.
There's lots more to add, but those are my basics.
Cheers
