I use 'music wire' from the hobby store in the right gauge. The stuff comes
in 3 ft (straight) lengths and is tougher than anything to cut, but you can
use it without having to drill the holes out (push in with pliers or metal
thimble) and it needs no glue. Plus, if you cut it square, it looks more
like track pins.

I've also heard of using appropo diameter styrene, then passing a flame
nearby to mushroom the end. Holds it in and adds the 'track pin' look. I
haven't done it, though, as I use Blacken-It on the tracks, and I'd have to
paint the white styrene rod.
