It all depends...

What are you depicting? Thin metal fenders would be perforated by many types of bullets/grenade/mortar shrapnel. Other thicker types of armor would show a dent here or there depending on the caliber of the weapon fired. Most armor plate or cast armor would show little effect of grenade shrapnel (remember, grenades are anti-personnel).

I recall seeing a WW2 era M4 that had been shot up by 20mm AA gun. No perforations but lots of little dents.

Restate your question with the type of vehicle/armor you are building and what you have in mind for the damaging items.
