A muzzle brake (note spelling) is a device that redirects some of the
gasses produced by firing a gun so that they are angled backwards. This
has the effect of reducing the recoil forces produced during firing. In
other words, it acts as a recoil brake (like a car brake) and is located
at the muzzle.
