Tom,
If you don't already have one, invest in a Flexi-File. This is a metal frame that holds a strip of Mylar sanding film and allows it to flex around curves. Another technique I use is to wrap a small piece of sandpaper around the barrel and hold it between my fingers while rotating the barrel with my other hand. This will eliminate the seam while still keeping the barrel round.
