Stephen,
it sounds like there was a stress fracture in the finders (before or after you removed them from the resin plug) and if the weather/conditions in the car were warm, this would cause the appearence of the crack.
I will not tell you what hot/warm or humid weather will do to a resin kit. Of course, if you were outside of the Harve de Grace building at AMPS - 2002, you may have herd some 'words" I said as my munitions Wespe died a horrible death.
