And, when you get to making the holes, there are several ways, but I
have always liked the following ways.
If the hit is in the main body where you can hide some extra thinning
then thin out the area behind the impact to paper thin with the dremel
and then pick at the area with a sharp knife tip to expose the jagged
hole edges and bend outward any edges of a cannon hit. Its very
effective, but practice on a junker first.
For area where you can't readily hide any interior scalloping, duplicate
the part in lead foil or beer can aluminium and then pick the hole in it
as before. The two materials are best used in different areas depending
upon how curved the real part is or how much access you have.
Experimentation is again the key.
For wooden truck beds you have a different problem. Wood will shatter
and splinter so I have in the past dug out the area of the hit with a
dremel (taking out larger areas for canon shots) and then refilling most
of the area with epoxy putty. This can then be teased, veined and
splintered in a very realistic way with the edge of an Exacto knife.
