I use a technique very similar to Paul's, but use full strips instead of
the little spacer 'blocks'. Just cement together alternate strips of, say
for example, .020x.040" strips with .020x .030" strips. I usually cement
them together on a piece of glass, when fully dry, it can be popped off the
glass with a single edge razor blade. A Chopper makes this real easy, too.
Barring that, Evergreen makes 'clapboard siding' in various sizes, which
doesn't look too bad.
