Steve,
Sounds like a buy! The minor problems you mentioned seem to be fixable. I'll especially go with the Tamiya gun swap as I have read elsewhere that the 20mm in the kit is basic.
I too thought the same on the decals. I saw them on a website (I cannot remember which) but the 12th SS did get my attention as well.
