For bullet and armour piercing entry holes in thin metal or armour I heat up a medium piece of wire, like a small nail or screwdriver, heat it up and push it through the plastic. This will curve the edge inwards as they would be on the real thing. When creating bend mudguards (or fenders for our overseas cousins), use either heat (for plastic) or just pliers (for PE) and imagine what caused the damage. A tree would cause a rounded dent whereas driving through a wall would crumple or even rip off the mudguard.
