Dear Paul,
If you can swing the $$$, MicroMark sells a great cordless soldering iron that you can get extra tips for. I'm neck deep right now into a major conversion of a 1/350 Tamiya Fletcher destroyer (forgive me) and have used the 1mm tip to put together scratchbuilt masts, platform supports etc. It works great and a single charge will get you through a couple of modeling sessions before you need to recharge. I agree with getting the 0.015 silver solder from Radio Shack, but, I would use, IMHO, liquid flux. Apply it with an old (clean) #1 or smaller dedicated paint brush. Much less messy than the paste and you can apply it with great precision! I was apprehensive about starting to solder, but now I solder anything that connects metal to metal! The bond is clean and much much stronger than any CA bond!
