I don't know how applicable it will be to 1-72nd scale kit since the panel lines will be much smaller... but on my Tamiya Marder III and StuG III kits' front glacis hatches from I sanded from the inside of the part until the hatch freed itself. This also has the added benefit of rendering the armour plate a more in-scale, thinner appearance.
