I've heard complaints about the poor representation of Tamiya's 'Sticker-Zimm' that is supplied with the new 1/16 King tiger kit, and have debated whether to risk trying to apply any to my tanks, as a bare upper hull runs $40-50 each.

Then while dozing the other night, it hit me: why not use a similar method to those making their own decals or making resin zimmerit sheets?

Mark out your panel lines on a piece of something, perhaps wax paper, a foil sheet or onion-skin. Then you roll out your putty on the template, making sure to maintain an alignment edge (for example, where the sponson upper edge meets the deck) Then use your preferred method on the sheet of putty (much like a mom using cookie-cutters on dough) Let it dry, and then apply it like resin-sheets, complete with its backing paper.

The 'sheet' will be no thicker than if applied directly to the hull, as the backing material represents the hull. If anything it can be more accurate as you can use a calibrated roller (rod with washer-ends to get a set thickness)

Any mistakes during pattern-application can be used in smaller pieces elsewhere, or if the bad areas are small, chipped out to represent damage from hostile fire.

If you need a curved surface, you do as normal but before the putty dries too much, lay the sheet on the curved surface where it will be used.

I'd like to try, but no-one can give me a rough idea of how big/wide to make the pattern applicator - I want to use the roller method and need to choose the right 'gears' to use. (for T1 & KT hulls)

Has anyone tried this method?
