For mantlet covers have you tried plastic bag material? The correct type is the more crinkly kind of plastic bag you get at the grocery store. You can usually find the "correct" colour. Cut it with sharp scissors and glue with super glue (CA). Once weathered it looks pretty good.
I've also experimented with this to make rolled up tarps, it shows promise. I also coloured a camouflage pattern with indelible ink marker pens. This worked well and I was able to roll the tarp up after... a lot more realistic than trying to paint the pattern on an already rolled up tarp.
