Subject:  DML Panzer IV E - hull fit problem POLL!List thread.

 Date:  Oct 17, 2005
 From:  Mark Pieters
Say, why don't we all chime in and let others know if we have fit problems or not, and if you followed the instructions to the letter or not. In my case, I had fit problems but fixed them by adding some evergreen between the front bow armor and the glacis and texturing in a weld bead. I did not follow instructions at all, instead jumping all over the sheet to build at my whim and double check authenticity or admire detail. Oh maybe one of the hulls is off? Describe your hull of choice too...So:

Fit issues; YES
Followed instructions to the letter; NO
Hull used; Early (X1, no additional armor plate)

In my case I think I might have caused the gap at the rear (I made it go away by shaving off the glacis and moving it rearward about one mm from the bow and then filling in the resulting gap with evergreen/weld bead) right from the very start. I didn't start at step one with the wheels or anything, I started by glueing B9 and B10 on the hull at step 4 (those are the lower hull side extenstions, with the front half of the bolt and gasket detail for the final drive covers). Perhaps we will find a common thread with this kit in that if you don't follow the assembly instructions, it will get you off track. Right now I don't have proof but I suspect it is very important to glue D52 (the front bow armor) on first before B9+B10 (lower hull side front ends). Perhaps this poll, if enough of us chime in will suggest there are no fit issues in the kit itself, but rather they are "user error" type problems created by ourselves. Or, perhaps it's simply real easy to get off track due to some lack of forsight in the engineering of the locating lines and such and we get off track too easily?

One last thing, Tom Cockle recommends glueing the fenders to the lowr hull first then the upper hull to the lower hull/fenders. That is what I am doing with mine and so far, after dryfitting upper to lower, it will work, but I will have to shave the locating ribs on each fender off (the ones that guide the upper hull side armor plates...). I have three more E's coming in the mail, and if lucky will get them this Friday. I will build another one with the additional armor plates and follow the instructions and we shall see if I get into trouble this time or not...Funny though, I found myself looking at my assembled Tristar D to get my bearings every once in a while, as the instructions are the standard Dragon "vague"..

My Final Verdict: Great kit with potential but Dragon needs to go back and fix a few glaring errors. I get the feeling they rushed this one out after hyping it so much, instead of taking another month and getting it as near perfect as it should have been...
