I read this string when I got home from work so I went down to the dungeon and assembled my upper hull after dinner to see how it fits. Mine seems to fit great with no gaps. I am building the late version with the extra armor. I haven't actually attached the upper and lower hulls nor totally finished assembling the upper hullbut it looks good to me.
The hull front and rear plates IMHO have no real positive placement or at least I would say the instructions are lacking a bit. Could they be improperly placed?
Is your lower hull warped does it match length wise with the other one in the box?
So far I have been impressed with the kit it is a little fiddley but that is the price of all that detail.
