You know, I think the problem arises when a 1/35th scale tank is textured to appear accurate to the naked eye. When you photograph it the whole perspective changes and becomes magnified. So something that might look extremely good unmagnified might appear overly textured when magnified. Hell! even the smoothest sheet will have great imperfections when magnified enough times.

What I think anyway.
