When using PE casting nos. make sure you soften them up with a bit of diluted putty or some enamel paint.

As for shaving them off the sprues, I use smaller nos. from Tamiya sprues. There's always one or two sprues that have a bunch of smaller numbers (about1.5mm high). I use a razor blade. I the flip them over and roll over them with a round metal xacto blade handle to smooth out the curve. Using sytrene nos. means that liquid cement softens them into the tank easier. Some Academy kits also have nos. as part of their sprues, expressly meant to be shaved off and added at the modeller's discretion -- neat idea!
